After we moved to our new house, our old vacuum started to lose suction and eventually lost it completely. We have three cats and a dog, so it’s very important that we have a great vacuum. We bought the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball about a month ago to replace the old vacuum, and I have been very happy with it so far.

PROS

* Lightweight / compact design – I know some have said that they think it’s heavy, but I guess it’s all relative. This vacuum is much lighter than any other vacuum I’ve had before. I have no problem carrying it up and down our tight spiral staircase. The compact design makes the machine easy to store. The extension wand slides inside the back of the machine and doubles as the handle, which declutters the machine.

* Great suction – I think this model has plenty of suction and does a great job cleaning our carpets.
~ Some have complained about their suction and about the machine not “fluffing” their carpet. We have berber carpeting throughout our home, so maybe the machine works better on dense carpet or carpeting with a low pile. In any case, this machine is far better than our old machine that sucked at sucking.

* Canister – The canister fits well against the machine’s gasket, so nothing leaks through. The canister is also easy to empty; a trigger releases the bottom and the waste falls into your trash can.
~ Some have complained about pet hair getting stuck in the canister, but I don’t find this to be a problem. It’s just the nature of the beast. I would rather have the hair in the canister than on my carpet.
~ Some reviewers say that the canister is too small. My last vacuum’s canister was only slightly larger and that machine was much bigger/bulkier. The compact design of the Dyson may limit the capacity of the canister, but I don’t mind dumping it more often.

* Maneuverability – The ball design really does make this machine easier to maneuver. It turns on a dime and cuts down the length of time it takes to vacuum the house. My mother has the Dyson Animal model without the ball, and when she visited and used my machine, she said that she wished she had gotten the one with the ball because it was much easier to use.

CONS

* Cord length – The cord on my last vacuum was very long, so in comparison, this one seems short. I can still vacuum at least a whole room without moving to a new outlet, so it could be worse.

* Attachment storage – not all of the attachments can be stored on board the machine.

In the end, I love this machine and it does a great job cleaning my carpets.

I absolutely love this vacuum. I was a bit pained, at first, to pay over 400 dollars for a vacuum but the Dyson DC25 is definitely well worth every dollar. I am a dog owner and my couches are covered in white fur daily. With my old vacuum, it used to take me a half house to vacuum the couch alone and I was never really satisfied with how it looked. My couches in the formal living room have buttons and it was always hard for the vacuum to suck up all the hair that was lodged under them. Now, with the Dyson DC25, my couches are cleaned in under five minutes and no hair is left stuck under the couch buttons…a drastic improvement.

My only complaint about the vacuum design is that the canister is small for the amount of pet hair I have to vacuum. I find myself emptying the canister frequently. I guess the canister size is a give and take since the vacuum is only 15 pounds! I am sure designing the vacuum with a canister larger would have resulted in a heavier vacuum.

We’d been searching for a good vacuum cleaner for some time. This meant we had some trial runs before we felt we had found one capable of keeping our home clean – a home that contains three kids and a dog. We bought the  Miele S5 vacuum because of its reputation  for quality and its promised longevity, giving us something that we expect will keep all our floor surfaces in a state of pristine cleanliness for many years to come.

Why does the Miele S5 rank so high?

* Goes through endurance testing in laboratories.

* All pieces go through rigorous tests and are subjected to stress exceeding normal use.

* Each vacuum will have a final quality test before moving on to the customer.

* Has excellent maneuverability.

* The wheels are mounted on steel axles, creating stability and ensuring easy movement.

* Has a travel ramp that allows you to get over thresholds and around obstructions.

* It has a long cord with an operating radius of 29½ feet.

* The power setting has six levels, depending on what you are cleaning or dusting.

* Easy-to-use.

* Has different filters, allowing you to capture things from the air – particles or odor.

Part of the reason why the Miele S5 is recommended by many is the quality assurance it goes through before it even hits the market. Every single vacuum and part undergoes a rigid production process, where every effort is made to embrace the Miele’s Bielefeld factory in Germany’s 107-year-old motto – “Forever Better.” This means every Miele S5 vacuum created goes through endurance testing and rigorous tests. The tests put stress on each vacuum and parts that exceed a normal residential use. Only once everything passes does the Miele brand get placed on the vacuum. Because of the engineering effort put into the Miele S5, you know you can plan on it lasting a long while.

Another important reason why the Miele S5 vacuum stands up well against the competition is how it handles all sorts of cleaning jobs. Its high performance and design allow it to take care of any type of floor. The six power levels are easy to adjust and let you clean rugs or carpets, hardwood or drapes. It has a parquet floor brush attachment to gently clean wood and tile floors and a crevice tool for hard-to-reach areas. The nice thing about the Miele S5 vacuum is it can cover an entire room in one sweep, rather than having to change outlets during a vacuum. It also has easy maneuverability, since the three smooth-running 360 castor wheels are placed on steel axles. These ensure stability and ease of movement. There’s a travel ramp designed into the Miele S5 to help you easily get over thresholds and around obstructions and an extra long cable is included so you don’t have to change electric sockets during the vacuuming period. It will give you an operating radius of 29½ feet.

While the Miele S5 could be considered expensive, I’d defy anyone to find a better vacuum for handling pet hair and the mess created by kids.

My 12 yr old Sharp upright gave up the ghost so I needed a new upright for upstairs. I read a lot of reviews here and at e-pinions and decided on this Eureka.

First I will say it is very important to read all of the manual, because it actually addresses some of the issues people have with this vacuum, such as:

(1) This machine is no heavier than my old one, but people complain it is heavy and hard to maneuver – the maneuverability and “heaviness” of it are greatly improved if one selects the proper brush height. Set it too low and yes, you will be struggling to pull this vacuum back toward you. The first time I used it OMG – it was quite a workout. I figured when I vacuumed I would count that as my upper body workout! Then I read the manual and duh! I raised the brush height one notch and what a difference. It’s not light as a feather, but much better.

(2) People complain that the brush roll stop (hard floor) switch is hard to move. The manual says it will be easier to move if the machine is on, the handle is released and you rock the machine back so there is no weight on the front wheels. It is hard if you try to move it otherwise.

(3) The foot pedal for the handle release is pretty stiff, but if you find the “sweet spot” it’s fine – just have to experiment with where to push. On my machine the hard part is getting the handle locked back up. I hope I don’t have the belt breakage problems some people have had, but so far I’m pleased with its performance and it seems fairly sturdy to me. I had recently cleaned my carpets with Capture (a dry powder) and this new vac got up quite a bit of powder my old vac left behind.

I loathe using tools on an upright thus I have a canister vac for that action – so I can’t address the utility of that, but it looks way easier than on my old upright. So far I am happy with this vac, and I am a neat freak who likes her carpets to look perfectly clean! Hope this was helpful…

Now that I’ve owned this vacuum cleaner for over a year I think i can fully provide pros and cons. The great thing is that it picks up everything from your carpet and floors – including pet hair that my dog sheds all year long. The cons? if you live in anything beyond a one-story the vacuum cleaner is HEAVY. Carrying 25 pounds up and down the stairs is not easy. It was very awkward trying to vacuum the carpeted stairs as the claw did not have enough suction to pull out hair embedded into the carpet. Please note that i change the bag frequently. One of the attachments – with brush inside – that came along with the vacuum broke within 6 months. Great suction but these other things, especially the weight, became problematic. Additionally, I have to put my weight into the foot release to begin vacuuming. The switch that adjusts from carpet to floors is also tough to move and I end up having to use both hands.
