Two cats and two fabric-covered couches, can you feel my pain? After a while, I was going nuts. I’d go broke buying the adhesive type lint rollers, the rubber ones (search for “sweepa”) and the reusable brush type didn’t do the job. All I’d heard about was dysons, dysons, dysons, so I started saving. But then I thought, hey, what I want is the little motorized roller brush attachment — so I got online, started searching, and found the Eureka 71B Hand Held Vacuum. I figured $40 as opposed to $500 was worth a try, especially with the good reviews.

And it *was*. It gets all the cat hair off my couch, and the nice thing is that the hose just tugs right out and you can also get the little cracks and crevices without missing a beat. The “riser visor” thing, I thought was kinda silly til I started using it — and it’s great. You can vacuum horizontally and vertically, and for furniture, stairs, etc–a great feature.

My only complaint is that it’s just a *bit* heavy, especially for longer use. Wears that arm out, but that can be a good thing, too.

I’m still hoping to get a dyson eventually, but for the job I wanted to do, getting pet hair off my furniture — this is *perfect*.

I would pay double what I paid for this!!!!

If you have pets or kids you NEED this vacuum! I would of easily paid $100 for the Eureka 71b Hand held. This little thing works great. I have two small children and two dogs, one lab and one pug. Both shed like crazy. I live in a 5th wheel with my family so I use this vacuum to clean the whole trailer. I still can’t believe how well it works. My carpet looks like new again when I use this vacuum. This last weekend we went to the dunes and took the trailer. It was a nasty wet weekend so with four adults, three kids under three, and three dogs,(pug, lab, and boxer) all going in and out all weekend, the trailer was FULL of sand everywhere. This little power vacuum got it all up. I can’t find or feel anymore sand in my trailer. I also used the vacuum to vacuum my bed and get the sand out of there as well :)

I feel like I can’t say enough good things about this vacuum it works so well. Yes it is a little heavy but it’s so worth it with how well it works.

My 12 yr old Sharp upright gave up the ghost so I needed a new upright for upstairs. I read a lot of reviews here and at e-pinions and decided on this Eureka.

First I will say it is very important to read all of the manual, because it actually addresses some of the issues people have with this vacuum, such as:

(1) This machine is no heavier than my old one, but people complain it is heavy and hard to maneuver – the maneuverability and “heaviness” of it are greatly improved if one selects the proper brush height. Set it too low and yes, you will be struggling to pull this vacuum back toward you. The first time I used it OMG – it was quite a workout. I figured when I vacuumed I would count that as my upper body workout! Then I read the manual and duh! I raised the brush height one notch and what a difference. It’s not light as a feather, but much better.

(2) People complain that the brush roll stop (hard floor) switch is hard to move. The manual says it will be easier to move if the machine is on, the handle is released and you rock the machine back so there is no weight on the front wheels. It is hard if you try to move it otherwise.

(3) The foot pedal for the handle release is pretty stiff, but if you find the “sweet spot” it’s fine – just have to experiment with where to push. On my machine the hard part is getting the handle locked back up. I hope I don’t have the belt breakage problems some people have had, but so far I’m pleased with its performance and it seems fairly sturdy to me. I had recently cleaned my carpets with Capture (a dry powder) and this new vac got up quite a bit of powder my old vac left behind.

I loathe using tools on an upright thus I have a canister vac for that action – so I can’t address the utility of that, but it looks way easier than on my old upright. So far I am happy with this vac, and I am a neat freak who likes her carpets to look perfectly clean! Hope this was helpful…

Now that I’ve owned this vacuum cleaner for over a year I think i can fully provide pros and cons. The great thing is that it picks up everything from your carpet and floors – including pet hair that my dog sheds all year long. The cons? if you live in anything beyond a one-story the vacuum cleaner is HEAVY. Carrying 25 pounds up and down the stairs is not easy. It was very awkward trying to vacuum the carpeted stairs as the claw did not have enough suction to pull out hair embedded into the carpet. Please note that i change the bag frequently. One of the attachments – with brush inside – that came along with the vacuum broke within 6 months. Great suction but these other things, especially the weight, became problematic. Additionally, I have to put my weight into the foot release to begin vacuuming. The switch that adjusts from carpet to floors is also tough to move and I end up having to use both hands.
