Two cats and two fabric-covered couches, can you feel my pain? After a while, I was going nuts. I’d go broke buying the adhesive type lint rollers, the rubber ones (search for “sweepa”) and the reusable brush type didn’t do the job. All I’d heard about was dysons, dysons, dysons, so I started saving. But then I thought, hey, what I want is the little motorized roller brush attachment — so I got online, started searching, and found the Eureka 71B Hand Held Vacuum. I figured $40 as opposed to $500 was worth a try, especially with the good reviews.

And it *was*. It gets all the cat hair off my couch, and the nice thing is that the hose just tugs right out and you can also get the little cracks and crevices without missing a beat. The “riser visor” thing, I thought was kinda silly til I started using it — and it’s great. You can vacuum horizontally and vertically, and for furniture, stairs, etc–a great feature.

My only complaint is that it’s just a *bit* heavy, especially for longer use. Wears that arm out, but that can be a good thing, too.

I’m still hoping to get a dyson eventually, but for the job I wanted to do, getting pet hair off my furniture — this is *perfect*.

I would pay double what I paid for this!!!!

If you have pets or kids you NEED this vacuum! I would of easily paid $100 for the Eureka 71b Hand held. This little thing works great. I have two small children and two dogs, one lab and one pug. Both shed like crazy. I live in a 5th wheel with my family so I use this vacuum to clean the whole trailer. I still can’t believe how well it works. My carpet looks like new again when I use this vacuum. This last weekend we went to the dunes and took the trailer. It was a nasty wet weekend so with four adults, three kids under three, and three dogs,(pug, lab, and boxer) all going in and out all weekend, the trailer was FULL of sand everywhere. This little power vacuum got it all up. I can’t find or feel anymore sand in my trailer. I also used the vacuum to vacuum my bed and get the sand out of there as well :)

I feel like I can’t say enough good things about this vacuum it works so well. Yes it is a little heavy but it’s so worth it with how well it works.

Great for Homes with Long Hair and Possibly the 1 Thing I Would Leave My Boyfriend For…

Even he agrees that he’d leave me for it! We’ve owned $100+ vacuum cleaners before and they’ve all died to my long, thick hair :( We have a dog and I shed way more than she does. Mostly what defeats us is the beater bar in regular vacuum machines. My long hair gets all tangled up with the beater bar so that it stops it from rotating. Belts burn out, etc. I went out on a limb and spent $300 on this and after owning the Miele S2 Olympus, I’m wondering why I didn’t get it before! This would probably have saved me a lot of money from buying those other vacuums. The design is really simple and I’ve wondered why things didn’t stay this simple with vacuums. The huge hose sucks in things that go straight to the bag! No complicated twists and turns! Nuts, bolts, buttons, lego pieces can be sucked straight into the vacuum without destroying it since it drops neatly into the bag. (You may have to reach into the bag to retrieve these things if you want them back though.) There are SO many things I love about the Miele S2120 Olympus!

1. It has good suction. Probably can’t suck up a bowling ball but it’s good enough for me!
2. It rolls around with you on its wheels. So much easier for a lightweight for me to vacuum when I don’t have to huff and puff behind a heavy vacuum.
3. It is light enough to carry around on its handle after you are done.
4. Switching from vacuuming carpeted floors to tile is VERY easy!
5. Changing the bags is easy!
6. The cord automatically rolls up with the press of a button! No more going up and down and up and down rolling the cord into place.
7. Detachable pieces make it very customizable! I purchased the basic model with the basic detachable parts and so far, it’s perfectly fine with me!

My one gripe so far is that the cord isn’t as long as I’d like. (I forget the length but I have to unplug and replug it when going into another room to vacuum.) But honestly, I don’t really care for the performance it has shown me. We’ve had it for a couple months and it is just AWESOME! Quality and durability were both also HUGE factors for me and having read all the rave reviews about Miele’s reputation, I am SO glad I went with this!

Better than I expected …

I’ve been so disappointed with my recent vacuum purchases that I had low expectations for this one too… boy was I wrong! I have all wood/tile floors with one large area ‘shag’ rug and several small rugs that I vacuum every week.

This vacuum won’t wow you with with all the fancy bells and whistles of the higher end models, but it will impress you with its:

** Amazing Suction Power (especially for a lightweight canister) it even picks up debris in its peripheral and I have long hair that sheds like crazy! :)
** Sleek, Lightweight Design (I like the the two options for clipping/storing the handle – very cool!);
** Self Sealing Vacuum Bags (so there’s no dust when you empty them);
** Quiet Volume (it was so quiet on the lowest setting that I had to double check it was on – and it still had amazing suction!);
** Smooth Swivel Casters that follow you around without any trip-ups.
** Outstanding 1 and 7 year Warranty
** Optional HEPA Filter if you need it.

I did call the company to verify a few things before I decided to purchase:

** The floor tool that comes standard on this model (the Miele  S2120 Olympus) does swivel, and tilts nearly flat so you can get under beds, and furniture with about 6″ of clearance. Don’t expect to get all the way under a low couch.

** This is what you will find in the box: Floor Tool, Crevasse Tool, Drapery Tool, Round Bristle Brush, 1 Dust Bag and 1 Clean Air Filter (both already installed). Plus, there is a simple manual and warranty information packet.

My Wish List for This Product:

** Longer Power Cord – It has a standard length cord, but I have a 1400 square foot house and have to re-plug it in 3 times to reach every room – not a real big deal.

Overall I am VERY happy with this purchase and love this vacuum! I would definitely recommend it to my own mother and friends!

It’s Like a Beloved Pet Who MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER

Awesome. This new generation fixes all the problems of the previous. Much smarter, much bigger dust bin, much better in every way. Great that it self-docks when tired. Maintanence is a snap…really could not be easier/faster. There are some negatives – how could there not be? – but this thing has such a contagious personality that it starts feeling like your pet, and you’re inclined to forgive, and even find the faults charming.

You have to prep the room (cords up and out of the way, no papers or clutter on the floor, move small items out of the room and learn which objects present problems and get them out of the way). Performance varies on throw rugs (it’s great on rug/carpet surfaces themselves, but Roomba can get caught up as it travels over edges of throw rugs that don’t have much weight or cling). It’s good at slowing down and banging objects gently, but less so on narrow vertical objects (e.g. piano legs), which it really clunks (not enough to damage, but it will make you wince). In terms of results, it’s a notch below a stout top-end British maid with her sturdy Hoover, but several notches above what mere mortals can achieve, and it’s especially good on edgework, under baseboards and furniture, and other spots most people would miss.Yes, it gets corners fine, in spite of its round shape. It’s got a whirling brush that ably gets at them.

Most of all, if you’re someone who’s non-meticulous about keeping up housekeeping cycles (even if not, like, a total slob), it’s hard to describe the satisfaction of ALWAYS having spotless floors. Since, per above, you’ll develop at least some degree of affection for your iRobot 530 Roomba, it’s the ideal pet…it vastly contributes to the household, yet its needs are few (I pull hairs out of its brushes with the affection of a dog owner checking his dalmation for tics).

I have a fairly large house, and one unit is more than enough. Every other day, I bring her upstairs to work, that’s all.

Oh, and it’s extraordinarily entertaining to watch. The drama of whether it’ll ever get to this hairball or that crumb is downright fraught. In spite of its seemingly random pattern, it does somehow get everything in the end.

One nice side effect: the act of prepping a room for vacuuming – i.e. getting clutter off the floor – is itself a life-changing improvement. I find it much easier to organize books, papers, etc, when it’s for an immediate purpose than as a general habit. So the house isn’t just cleaner, floor-wise….it’s also generally better kept-up. Love my iRobot 530. Buy one now.

I love my Roomba

As with most, I was skeptical as to how good of a job the Roomba could do. And just like everyone else, I’ve been converted. The iRobot 530 Roomba does a good job of vacuuming my floors. And yes, it gets into the corners and most other difficult-to-reach areas (the brush at the front-right “corner” effectively pushes dirt and debris from corners in front of the Roomba’s path). Okay okay, it probably doesn’t do as good of a job as a standard vacuum; maybe 90% as thorough. But you have to keep in mind that you’ll run it 3 or 4 times a week, meaning it does as good of a job as if you were vacuuming with a regular vacuum once a week (which I, lazy as i am, didn’t even do). And it gets under couches and coffee tables and other areas where I would expect most wouldn’t bother to move furniture to reach.

Negatives? The only one i can think of is if you have cables/cords on your floors. Yes, this series does have the anti-tangle feature, which does work most of the time. But i’ve noticed that if you have long cords with lots of slack (say underneath the bed, where I hide a lot of cords), it’ll either pull the cords around or just give up. To remedy this, I’ve just pushed the cords and cables along the floor boards; not really a big deal.

In summary, I would imagine the Roomba is to our generation what the dishwasher was when it first was invented; a super useful appliance that can reduce a lot of manual work if you know its limitations and accommodate it a bit.

Blew Me Away

I was so fed up with buying a cheap $50 vacuum every year, that I finally decided to make the investment and purchase a Dyson. I had read some great reviews online and from a family member and figured I couldn’t go wrong.

When I received the Dyson DC24 Upright I immediately gave it a whirl. My apartment is 800 square feet and by the time I was done the canister was full. Now, my husband and myself are not messy people but wow I could not believe what it picked up out of our carpet. Just the dirt/dust/fibers it grabbed- I was in shock. It transitioned so easily from the carpet to tile in the bathroom and kitchen- it didn’t just kick around all the debris like most vacuums would on hard floors. IT PICKED UP EVERYTHING.

The Dyson is very quiet- almost tranquil compared to others I’ve had. It is so easy to use and manuever. It really does just ease around corners, under and around furniture. I barely had to move anything out of the way. It is very light-weight also so my back wasn’t breaking by the time I was done.

This unit is a great size for an apartment. If I had a home/couple hundred more square feet I would consider upgrading to the DC25 but still it’s nice that the head is smaller- it may not cover as much floor space but it definitely gets into tight spaces well.

The only minor set backs I’ve noticed is the hose could be a little longer. It would make it easier to get in between the couch cushions and up high on the curtains if there was more length to work with. The cord is also a bit short (even in my apartment I need to switch to another outlet between rooms). Even 5 extra feet would be nice.

I am writing this review a few months after purchasing the vacuum so it will be interesting to see if it still keeps its suction and performs like this in 5 years and so on. I have faith that it will. I definitely recommend this product- I feel it was worth the investment and I will save in the long run.

Great Little Vacuum (with big power!)

I just purchased the DC24 All Floors, and I LOVE IT! It lives up to all its expectations and claims and exceeds some as well! It is very powerful, don’t let its size fool you! Because it is a compact vacuum, it has a much smaller canister capacity than it’s larger counterparts, but what it lacks in capacity it more than makes up for in how easily store-able and carry-able it is! If you have a large house and also adequate storage for a larger vacuum, you might want to go for the DC-25, but for me it is perfect! (1300 sq foot home with very little storage space for a vacuum) I have two cats (long and short hair), a dog, a toddler, and a husband, and it has no problems tackling anything any of them can throw at me! (If only it mopped too!) The only downside I have encountered is that the cord is not very long, and so to reach all the corners of my house I have to change outlets a couple times, but for me that is a small price to pay for a vacuum that does not make me mad! And did I mention, no filters to replace and no belts to replace (no more burnt rubber smell!), so there is no more out of pocket expense than the cost of the vacuum itself! That alone to me justifies buying a more expensive (and superior) vacuum. I love my Dyson! :D

No Joint Pain!

I love this vacuum, and can’t believe I waited so long to purchase one! Amazon was way cheaper than Target and it arrived two days after I ordered it! I have rheumatoid arthritis, even had all the knuckles in my right hand removed a few years ago, so vacuuming has always been a major chore for me! Especially since I have to do it often because I have a black cat! As soon as I pulled the DC24 Vacuum out of the box, and put a few things together (very easy and quick), I knew it was perfect for me! It was so light, I couldn’t believe it and it cleaned better than any vacuum I had ever owned! Sucked up all the black cat fur, and moved around and under furniture like a dream! The canister was very easy to empty as well. And this thing picked up dirt that I didn’t even know I had! My carpet looks BRAND NEW! I look forward to using this once a week, and am extremely happy with it. I’m bragging about it to everyone! I highly recommend it! My joints are no longer sore from simply vacuuming. I’m so glad I got it, really worth the money!

It may be early days but so far the reviews for the Garry Vac aren’t that positive – with most complaints seeming to center around its noise, the motor burning out and poor after sales service.

This may change in the future but at the time of writing (July 2010), it might be best to stay away.

I bought the product in March of 09.  I already have had to have it replaced because the motor started making an exceptionally loud noise and it would not stand upright as well without falling by itself.

More importantly, the Customer Service leaves much to be desired.  I get no responses from them when I send emails.  You wait on the phone for 20+ minutes at a time.  Their reps. will not give you appropriate information on higher ups to contact.  You get disconnected.  My time is valuable.  But when it takes 5 calls and an hour of my time waiting, I get upset.

I don’t expect  free shipping if I was using the product for 1 yr.+  However, to have to pay another $76 for shipping and processing after 4 months of use is quite a ripoff.  It cost me $11 to send it back.  The replacement has the scuffed plastic look like it has been used and refurbished.  BUT, WHAT REALLY $%$# ME OFF IS NO REPLY ON NUMEROUS EMAILS, NOT TO MENTION THAT THEIR WEBSITE DOESN’T FUNCTION.  EX. “ASK BOB”.  WHAT A JOKE.

I was sucked into the infomercial even ordered extra bags and pads for the steam mop on the original order. Received the product today and found out that I was scammed in my opinion! The Garry has what seems like half the suction of my 1 1/2 year old Eureka Smart Vac that I purchased from Walmart for approx. $130.00. After deciding to return the vacuum and contacting Garry customer service I figured out how they get you. Now I am stuck with about a $100.00 bill for the shipping and handling they charged 29.95 shipping and handling for the steam mop, 39.95 for the shipping and handling for the vacuum and 10.00 for the additional bags (8) which have no value other than shipping and handling and however much it is going to cost me to ship this back to them, which I’m estimating to be no more than $20.00.

As far as the product goes, it is very simple designed, and would only be good for picking up cereal or large piles of dirt. It does not lift the material of my carpet and make it looked vacuumed the way my Eureka Smart Vac does!!

In my opinion it seems more like an electric broom. it is light weight because it is made of hallow metals and thin plastics and has a small high rpm motor which makes a loud noise I can clearly hear over my other vacuum almost twice as loud. As for the bags, the hyproallergenic bags appear to be quite thinner than the arm and hammer replacement bags that I use in my Eureka!!!

In my opinion the Garry should be compared to the shark stick vac or a similar product. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!

PS.. not to be totally negatitive it may work for you if you have a high shagg carpet that the fibers pull out of easily! (The Garry has a gentle cleaning)

After we moved to our new house, our old vacuum started to lose suction and eventually lost it completely. We have three cats and a dog, so it’s very important that we have a great vacuum. We bought the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball about a month ago to replace the old vacuum, and I have been very happy with it so far.

PROS

* Lightweight / compact design – I know some have said that they think it’s heavy, but I guess it’s all relative. This vacuum is much lighter than any other vacuum I’ve had before. I have no problem carrying it up and down our tight spiral staircase. The compact design makes the machine easy to store. The extension wand slides inside the back of the machine and doubles as the handle, which declutters the machine.

* Great suction – I think this model has plenty of suction and does a great job cleaning our carpets.
~ Some have complained about their suction and about the machine not “fluffing” their carpet. We have berber carpeting throughout our home, so maybe the machine works better on dense carpet or carpeting with a low pile. In any case, this machine is far better than our old machine that sucked at sucking.

* Canister – The canister fits well against the machine’s gasket, so nothing leaks through. The canister is also easy to empty; a trigger releases the bottom and the waste falls into your trash can.
~ Some have complained about pet hair getting stuck in the canister, but I don’t find this to be a problem. It’s just the nature of the beast. I would rather have the hair in the canister than on my carpet.
~ Some reviewers say that the canister is too small. My last vacuum’s canister was only slightly larger and that machine was much bigger/bulkier. The compact design of the Dyson may limit the capacity of the canister, but I don’t mind dumping it more often.

* Maneuverability – The ball design really does make this machine easier to maneuver. It turns on a dime and cuts down the length of time it takes to vacuum the house. My mother has the Dyson Animal model without the ball, and when she visited and used my machine, she said that she wished she had gotten the one with the ball because it was much easier to use.

CONS

* Cord length – The cord on my last vacuum was very long, so in comparison, this one seems short. I can still vacuum at least a whole room without moving to a new outlet, so it could be worse.

* Attachment storage – not all of the attachments can be stored on board the machine.

In the end, I love this machine and it does a great job cleaning my carpets.

I absolutely love this vacuum. I was a bit pained, at first, to pay over 400 dollars for a vacuum but the Dyson DC25 is definitely well worth every dollar. I am a dog owner and my couches are covered in white fur daily. With my old vacuum, it used to take me a half house to vacuum the couch alone and I was never really satisfied with how it looked. My couches in the formal living room have buttons and it was always hard for the vacuum to suck up all the hair that was lodged under them. Now, with the Dyson DC25, my couches are cleaned in under five minutes and no hair is left stuck under the couch buttons…a drastic improvement.

My only complaint about the vacuum design is that the canister is small for the amount of pet hair I have to vacuum. I find myself emptying the canister frequently. I guess the canister size is a give and take since the vacuum is only 15 pounds! I am sure designing the vacuum with a canister larger would have resulted in a heavier vacuum.

We’d been searching for a good vacuum cleaner for some time. This meant we had some trial runs before we felt we had found one capable of keeping our home clean – a home that contains three kids and a dog. We bought the  Miele S5 vacuum because of its reputation  for quality and its promised longevity, giving us something that we expect will keep all our floor surfaces in a state of pristine cleanliness for many years to come.

Why does the Miele S5 rank so high?

* Goes through endurance testing in laboratories.

* All pieces go through rigorous tests and are subjected to stress exceeding normal use.

* Each vacuum will have a final quality test before moving on to the customer.

* Has excellent maneuverability.

* The wheels are mounted on steel axles, creating stability and ensuring easy movement.

* Has a travel ramp that allows you to get over thresholds and around obstructions.

* It has a long cord with an operating radius of 29½ feet.

* The power setting has six levels, depending on what you are cleaning or dusting.

* Easy-to-use.

* Has different filters, allowing you to capture things from the air – particles or odor.

Part of the reason why the Miele S5 is recommended by many is the quality assurance it goes through before it even hits the market. Every single vacuum and part undergoes a rigid production process, where every effort is made to embrace the Miele’s Bielefeld factory in Germany’s 107-year-old motto – “Forever Better.” This means every Miele S5 vacuum created goes through endurance testing and rigorous tests. The tests put stress on each vacuum and parts that exceed a normal residential use. Only once everything passes does the Miele brand get placed on the vacuum. Because of the engineering effort put into the Miele S5, you know you can plan on it lasting a long while.

Another important reason why the Miele S5 vacuum stands up well against the competition is how it handles all sorts of cleaning jobs. Its high performance and design allow it to take care of any type of floor. The six power levels are easy to adjust and let you clean rugs or carpets, hardwood or drapes. It has a parquet floor brush attachment to gently clean wood and tile floors and a crevice tool for hard-to-reach areas. The nice thing about the Miele S5 vacuum is it can cover an entire room in one sweep, rather than having to change outlets during a vacuum. It also has easy maneuverability, since the three smooth-running 360 castor wheels are placed on steel axles. These ensure stability and ease of movement. There’s a travel ramp designed into the Miele S5 to help you easily get over thresholds and around obstructions and an extra long cable is included so you don’t have to change electric sockets during the vacuuming period. It will give you an operating radius of 29½ feet.

While the Miele S5 could be considered expensive, I’d defy anyone to find a better vacuum for handling pet hair and the mess created by kids.

This is the most INCREDIBLE stick vac and hand vac! I really LOVE it! I am used to my Kirby and while I adore it, I was really curious about this item. My opinion is that Electrolux has a wonderful reputation and paired with the potentially extreme convenience I decided to give this a try. I have 2 babies, 2 kitties, hardwood floors throughout with some ceramic tile and a couple of area rugs.

This item is fabulous on each and every surface! I use it on all floor surfaces, rugs, furniture, even bedding (ie: kitties go under the bed leaving their fur on the dust ruffles) with great results! It will pick up kitty hair, remodeling dust, new rug shedding, cheerios, and more! I’ve seen gripes about emptying the ‘chamber’ and, in my opinion, if you don’t want your stick vac to pick up debris – find a cheaper stick vac! This one is absolutely wonderful, worth every penny and then some! Buy It!

I purchased the first one of these back in 2004 at the hardware store. It was perfect except that it had pads instead of rollers that would come off after some time. I would scratch my hardwood floors. By that time, it retreated to the basement for easy cleanup. I missed it so much on the main level of my house I purchased another one. A shark. AWFUL. It only lasted about 5 months and really stunk when it came to picking up small fine crumbs. This time Electrolux changed their design and had rollers. AWESOME. I purchased it and it has been wonderful. I’ve had the “green” colored one for almost two years, and it is still going strong. No this is not a regular vacuum as I have a Rainbow Vacuum, but after dinner, it is perfect to clean up the kitchen and run over the rest of the house. I have a cocker spaniel, three year old, and a wonderful hubbie who ALL take off their shoes or clean their feet prior to entering the house. But of course, we still get little stuff inside.

To show you how much I love this vacuum, I purchased one for my mother in law, and a friend of ours who lets us stay at her cabin in Washington. Then years later, I tried to talk my parents into buying one and they never would, so for xmas I purchased one for my dad as a joke. My dad has said dozens of times that it was the best gift he ever has received. My dad has never cleaned house in his life until he retired. Now he helps my mom and she has made comments that her kitchen has never been so clean on the floor. My dad vacuums almost every day. His pet peave is when he is walking across the floor and can feel dirt. He hates that, so he vacuums for my mom. Last, I was on the computer purchasing one for my husbands grandmother. She is turning 90 and she keeps her house perfectly. I thought this would be easier for her and she would enjoy it. No I am purchasing my 6th one for myself or someone else.

Love the vacuum and will buy another one when this one dies. $100 is not that much when you look at how much I use it.

I received my Pet Roomba before Christmas and have been using it since. My house is a real test with 3 very long haired dogs inside most of the day. I run the Roomba every day to keep the hair down to a minimum and we’ve noticed the floors are much cleaner (even though I used to vacuum alot).

However, if you buy this you should know that it requires frequent cleaning of the brushes, particularly the axle area where hair gets easily wrapped (pull off the end cap over the axle). By frequent I mean once or twice during the cleaning cycle. Otherwise, the brushes just stop moving leaving you with a cute robot that just drives around chasing the dogs! So this means you really should only run it when you are at home to keep it clean. I also have already cleaned the front wheel (just pops off – was really full of hair) and the side brush (unscrew the screw).

Bottom line, the unit works great so long as it is kept really clean. I’ve got the cleaning down to a minute so it isn’t too big of a deal. But if you think you are just going to run the Roomba and empty the dirt bin once in awhile, you should probably not buy it.

I have had my Roobma Pet for 6 weeks now and love it more all the time. We have 2 lab/husky mix dogs that shed a ton all year and this machine works wonders on my hardwood and tile floors. I will turn it on before we go up to bed and in the morning the floors are clean and it is back in its dock, seems like we have night elves who come in and clean while we are sleeping.

I like having 2 bins and usually use the larger one when I am cleaning an area where the dogs have been. In the bedrooms and office I like the smaller bin with the filter. The brushes need to be cleaned and carpet and hair balls picked off every other time I run it but this takes a fraction of the time that it usually takes for me to do the vacuuming myself. The brushes are very easy to clean and a small amount of dust remains on the floor after doing this- easy for it to pick up on the next run through.

I would recommend this product to pet owners and people with small children- quiet enough not to wake them and you can leave it in a room and close the door and not worry about it while watching your child. I am thinking about getting a second Roomba for our upstairs- then I can run both at the same time and not have to wait for it to charge up.

The Roomba 610 Professional is simply superb. Roomba represents a very effective, fascinating and sophisticated technology. Our home has NEVER had floors so clean. It doesn’t get any better than this. I know Consumer Reports didn’t think much of the Roomba in their last report. But I don’t think they have tested the recent models with the new software and operational improvements. Once you get used to how she works and you start using her correctly, things run very smoothly.

What is good about it? Well, it cleans your floors so you don’t have to! You set the lighthouses, clean the brushes/axles, clear your rooms of small obstacles and press start. The thing is extremely thorough. However, it can’t clean stairs (obviously) and it can get behind doors. But, it does go under furniture (limited by clearances). It cleans edges, it cleans carpets, hard floors, tile/wood, oriental rugs etc. Generally, it does a great job.

What is bad about it? The maintenance seems to be at first until you realize “Hey, I am not vacuuming my floors. I am not bending, stooping, plugging/unplugging, pushing/pulling”. The maintenance only takes seconds and a seven year old could do it. Some have said that roomba is noisy. It approximates the sound of a bathroom exhaust fan. Thus, it is only a fraction as loud as a traditional vacuum cleaner.

There are several very important points when using roomba. First, you want to make sure the rooms to be cleaned are free of papers, small diameter cords (like laptop cords) , window blind cords hanging on the ground, blanket fringes etc. Second, you need to use the lighthouses appropriately so that roomba can clean one room before moving to another (or set them to have roomba stay out of areas you don’t want cleaned). Third, you must keep the brushes, axles, wheels free of hair/debris. This only takes a minute or two. Fourth, you want to run roomba every other day or at least twice per week. This way, she doesn’t get choked from a neglected floor.

If you have pets or you just like having a clean floor, I wouldn’t waste any more time. Buy one. You won’t be disappointed. If you are, take it back…it is guaranteed.

I got the professional series because I have a family of professional grade mess makers (kids, husband, pets, etc.). I love it! I think when people are dissatisfied with it they do not understand what it is and what it is not. It won’t clean up an already neglected floor. You start with clean floors and then push a button everyday and let it run around your house doing upkeep and you won’t have to vacuum anything except for behind items it can’t get to once a month or so.

Before my roomba I vacuumed 2 times a week and still dirt would show up on the bottom of peoples white socks. Since roomba no more dirt!!! It handles the cat fur and it even found an earring I lost over a year ago that must of been hiding someplace. The best part is it can get under things my vacuum never could reach. Yes, you have to know its limitations. It is a programmed device. You have to change something’s around your home to work with it. Get wires off the floor so it won’t get stuck, for instance. But this thing makes the floors shine and the rugs a joy to walk on. In fact I am purchasing another one for upstairs this week.

I read Consumer Reports and the MANY reviews on Amazon before I made my purchase, and I just have to say: I love this vacuum! I have long hair and 2 pets, so I know what its like to need a good vacuum. This one sucks up everything on my hardwood and tile floors and on the carpet. The attachments’ suction is also incredibly strong- love it for couches and carpeted stairs. And you can’t beat the price, but mind you, I was so in need of a good vacuum, I was willing to pay $500-600 for a Dyson till I started researching vacuums. And: its NOT too loud. :)

BAsed on reviews on [...] I went to look at this vacuum and one other. i bought this. I am excited! I vacummed 2 stories of carpeted home and 14stairs in no time flat.

It has excellent suction, is (relatively) quiet, light weight, seems to be self propelled and it was CHEAP! I wish the extension tube was a bit longer, but as the vacuum has a narrow enough profile to sit stably on stairs, it isn’t a really big deal. i like this vacuum cleaner a LOT! Highly recommend it at this point.

Can’t attest to the durability of this product yet, but so far I am EXTREMELY happy with it.

We have gross old carpets and it cleans them PERFECTLY!! It has alot of power, has several settings, and was a GREAT price!

Materials do seem somewhat cheap… vacuum seems to be made of cheaper quality plastic…. but we only vacuum once a week, and frankly, I did not want to spend too much…. we are hoping not to have carpet for too long.

Bought at recommendation of Consumer Reports and other Amazon reviewers… saw that some people said its made more cheaply than it used to be… not sure, but the power and functioning so far are excellent. Will have to find where I can buy the right bags for it. It does come with one bag to start you off.

Cord is decent length. So is the pipe thing that you use for cleaning in hard-to-reach areas (like under beds). Comes with a few good attachments.

Great buy for the money.

Time to be upfront, I researched a new vac for four weeks. My sister and I put in new carpet, paint , appliances and fantastic Persian rugs in our seven year old house. I am a dog trainer and have threes shelties as house pets, two cats, one meduim furred and live with a mother that refuses to take her gardening shoes off in the house.( I like to be barefoot)

I fully expect any vac that lives with me to be dead in three to four years. This is a given, and oh, my sister had asthma and allergies, I run a full house vac 2 to 3 times a week.( I do keep the shelties groomed and trimmed and the cats too.)
I love a clean house. My house never smells.

I bought the dyson at the local store, so I could return if it was not the right thing.
Its the same size and weight as my old sharp vac, (ignore the weight complaints, this is what a real vac weighs).
The suction is stunning, anyone with a vac over three years old should not be surprised at how much stuff is in the carpet.
What was scary was watching a brand new Hamadan 150 count Persian rug lifted in the jaws of this beast and shook. Like it was a cheap thin rug. scary.
I worked for two hours and now know how to work this incredible beast, like driving a real car for the first time.( In my life I have owned 7 vacs, including a rainbow).

Heavy area rugs must be vacumed backward, from the top to the bottom nearest you, push 6 inches, pull 12 inches. Heavy area rugs must be done very slowly!!!! ( forget cheap thin rugs, this machine will eat them).

Directions for the wand extension are poor, took me an hour to figqure out how to get the extension back on command.
I love the length of the wand, I hate doing stairs and floor board. I de furred my sisters room, base boards, under the bed and all the crannies. The wand made it easy as and fast to do.

The only potential breakable part I see is the canister bottom, and sides, and hinge, it feels a bit fragile. (don’t knock the tools in the garbage with the dirt.)
So it was a good buy, I paid $428 at the local fred meyer. I love the bagless, Love the wand extension, love the cleaning power, ( will be carefull not to destroy the rugs).

wish I could fiqure out how the belt is changed, that should not be a service call.

***** three months later its going strong, the interior filters are a bit clogged, so i can vacumn the area rug most of the time. great buy*****

**** one year later, still running strong! sister broke the bottom off the canister yesterday, she is small and got impatient and banged it on the tall garbage can! replacement is $$$40 from dyson. now you know, don’t bang the bottom! bottom roller is apin to take out and clean, which I need to do a lot, with all the fur. (two of the shelties lost alot of fur this year) many compliments from my clients about how nice my house is, and ” it never smells like dog or cat” now WHEN WILL DYSON MAKE A CARPET SCRUBBER?

The best life advice I got in my twenties was ” BUY Good vacumns, and replace them when they break.”

When our Shark went on the blink for the third time we decided it was time to get serious about a decent handheld vacuum. We own a Dyson full size vacuum so I naturally did my research presuming that the right answer was to get the Dyson cordless as well. However when I compared the reviews (some good, some not so good) to the price it gave me some heartburn so I decided to look around. Glad I did.

I did not have high expectations for this product. By and large I find the Black & Decker brand to be a decent value for the money, but not necessarily great quality. This product changed my opinion. It’s very well made, with solid construction and an intriguing design. Those factors are very important to me, but it’s a vacuum, so if it doesn’t suck none of those factors matter much. Boy, does this thing suck! It’s a bit noisy, but when you consider the amount of suction it creates it’s little wonder that you can hear it so well. So far, everything I have used it for has been handled with great ease and satisfaction.

The charging station is pretty convenient and intuitive. My only criticism of it is that the charge light never changes color when the unit is fully charged – this would be a nice feature to add and is one of my issues with the Shark. But you can leave it in the base to trickle charge all the time without issues.

The pivoting nose is great because in the folded position the unit takes up so much less room, while in the extended position it’s the right length and balances nicely.

Overall, this is a five-star handheld cordless vacuum and is the one I would recommend to anyone based on my positive experiences with it so far. If anything changes to alter my opinion, I will append this review.

My 12 yr old Sharp upright gave up the ghost so I needed a new upright for upstairs. I read a lot of reviews here and at e-pinions and decided on this Eureka.

First I will say it is very important to read all of the manual, because it actually addresses some of the issues people have with this vacuum, such as:

(1) This machine is no heavier than my old one, but people complain it is heavy and hard to maneuver – the maneuverability and “heaviness” of it are greatly improved if one selects the proper brush height. Set it too low and yes, you will be struggling to pull this vacuum back toward you. The first time I used it OMG – it was quite a workout. I figured when I vacuumed I would count that as my upper body workout! Then I read the manual and duh! I raised the brush height one notch and what a difference. It’s not light as a feather, but much better.

(2) People complain that the brush roll stop (hard floor) switch is hard to move. The manual says it will be easier to move if the machine is on, the handle is released and you rock the machine back so there is no weight on the front wheels. It is hard if you try to move it otherwise.

(3) The foot pedal for the handle release is pretty stiff, but if you find the “sweet spot” it’s fine – just have to experiment with where to push. On my machine the hard part is getting the handle locked back up. I hope I don’t have the belt breakage problems some people have had, but so far I’m pleased with its performance and it seems fairly sturdy to me. I had recently cleaned my carpets with Capture (a dry powder) and this new vac got up quite a bit of powder my old vac left behind.

I loathe using tools on an upright thus I have a canister vac for that action – so I can’t address the utility of that, but it looks way easier than on my old upright. So far I am happy with this vac, and I am a neat freak who likes her carpets to look perfectly clean! Hope this was helpful…

Now that I’ve owned this vacuum cleaner for over a year I think i can fully provide pros and cons. The great thing is that it picks up everything from your carpet and floors – including pet hair that my dog sheds all year long. The cons? if you live in anything beyond a one-story the vacuum cleaner is HEAVY. Carrying 25 pounds up and down the stairs is not easy. It was very awkward trying to vacuum the carpeted stairs as the claw did not have enough suction to pull out hair embedded into the carpet. Please note that i change the bag frequently. One of the attachments – with brush inside – that came along with the vacuum broke within 6 months. Great suction but these other things, especially the weight, became problematic. Additionally, I have to put my weight into the foot release to begin vacuuming. The switch that adjusts from carpet to floors is also tough to move and I end up having to use both hands.

First off, let me note that I chose this product after reading the reviews on amazon and also the reviews on [...]

My duplex is all linoleum and I have 2 cats and 1 dog-an akita. As you can imagine, there is A LOT of pet hair that gets accumulated throughout the house.
I have now used this vacuum for over a week now, and have fallen in love with its ease of use, the amount of dirt and pet hair it picks up, and its long charge. It picks up pet hair with ease, and picks up a lot of dirt that I would not have been able to get with a broom alone. The user manual states that fully charged it can last as long as 16 minutes on hard floor without the brush. However, I have found it lasts a good 20 + minutes. In fact, I have yet to not vacuum my entire duplex (1000 sq feet) with it loosing it’s charge!

I noticed several reviews on this product stating how heavy it is to lift over the trash can and what a pain it is. I am 8 1/2 months pregnant and am able to lift the vacuum over our kitchen-sized trash can with ease. Is it a little bulky? Sure, but it picks up so much dirt and pet hair that it is worth me lifting it over the trash can. After every use I have removed the filter as well to brush it out to get even more dust out.
The only thing negative I can say about this is the fact that when I received it in the mail, it took 24 hours to fully charge up- however you are going to find that with anything like that- when you get a new cell phone is a prime example.

If you are on the fence about purchasing this, I can tell you first hand it is a worthwhile purchase. My husband was doubtful that we really “needed” this, after all- we have a full size vacuum cleaner. However given the fact that I am pregnant, I needed something lighter and more portable. This is great for a quick cleaning or if you just need to clean one room of your house. I am cleaning my whole house with it now and it is working great!

Reviewer: O. Cooper  (Issaquah, WA USA)

Our house is built on a hillside in four levels to take advantage of a great view, so we have six carpeted staircases to clean. We replaced an upright two years ago at a “Bed & Bath” shop, with a bagless canister vac, based upon the salespersons recommendations for using a canister with lots of stairs. We did find the canister was a good choice for the stairs, but it was not easy to clean the dust container and filters, and going from the carpet to bare floor attachment required shuffling the parts. While not particularly difficult, it was an annoyance to stop and retireve whichever attachment was needed, and it always seemed to be on the last floor I’d cleaned. When the spring loaded button that kept the attachments on the wand broke, we found no one local carried replacement parts. We tried the web and found thE part was not available anywhere. Since we’ve become regular Amazon shoppers, we decided to consult with other Amazon patrons opinions about vacuums before buying another.

After reading many recommendations, we settled on the Wind Tunnel Electronic and fired off the order. We have had it for about two months and we are more pleased with this vacuum than any we’ve had in the last 35 years. The powerful motor produces several levels of suction, which are controlled from buttons easily accessible to the thumb of the hand you are using to hold and direct the wand. Another button activates the carpet beaters, which allows the user to go from carpeted floors to hard surfaces simply by pushing the button. The canister has a handy compartment that contains a crevase tool and brush attachment. The metal wand detaches from the floor attachment with a touch of your toe to a release lever, making it possible to eaisly go from the carpet attachment to a brush to clean air vents, shelves, and tables; then reinsert the wand into the floor attachment from a standing position. The designer of this machine had obviously cleaned more than one house!

We have two cats and a dog, so every cleaning we are amazed to find SOOOOO MUCH hair and fur along with dander in the canister. We can not imagine how the pets haven’t disappeared, since we pick up enough every cleaning to build another small cat. That said, there is no discernable odor from the air pulled into the canister and filters, which are easy to clean and are washable, so every time we begin to clean it’s like starting with a new machine.

Hoover has made the perfect machine for us and we recommend it to anyone with pets, stairs, and mixtures of carpet, wood, tile and vinyl floors.

Reviewer:  MJB (Austin Texas)

I ordered this Polaris Miele vacuum in December 2009 and have been using it now for 5 months. It’s a terrific vacuum I wish I had known about it before my previous vacuum.

I previously had a Simplicity which was a piece of garbage. My Simplicity was in the shop for repair within days of us bringing it home and had to go in for this or that repair over the next two years while it was under warranty. Once the warranty ran out and it broke AGAIN, I threw it away and bought this Miele.
We wish we had bought this brand in the first place. We are tough, tough, tough on our vacuums. Our house is large with hardwood floors, rough stone tile areas, and a cement screen porch and we have two cats who shed and scatter litter everywhere. We have dark colored hardwood floors so someone is always tracking in some kind of dirt and there’s always something on the floor that needs to be vacuumed.

This vacuum is so small it fits easily in our pantry where we can whip it out easily. It’s so light and easy to carry it’s easier than picking up the broom. The cord does seem a little short, but my other canisters all had that issue. On this one, the cord pulls out and retracts so easily I just attach an extension cord and it’s no problem. (After about 5 months my former Simplicity vacuum cord retractor completely stopped working and I was told there was no way to repair it).

This Miele vacuum doesn’t really work on carpets, but I’ve used it in our walk in closet (only downstairs area with carpet) and with a little muscle power it can work. I’ve never had a hardwood floor canister vacuum work on carpet. (We have an old reliable 10 year old Windtunnel that’s too rough for our hardwoods but works great for our upstairs carpeted rooms.) The bags are easy to change on the Miele.

Our house is so big that when I was considering purchasing this Miele I was considering getting the next size up/bigger Miele as I was concerned that this little Polaris might not be able to handle our needs. But, I didn’t want to spend the money on the bigger one though after being burned with the terrible Simplicity vacuum. I didn’t want to spend that much until I knew I could trust the brand. Now that I’ve had this vacuum for 6 months I don’t think I needed the bigger one anyway.

This Polaris is truly excellent and I really like that it is so light and easy to carry around and manipulates easily on the floors. The only con I can think of is that my attachments that fit on my Windtunnel and Simplicity don’t fit on this vacuum, it seems the Europeans have different sized hose ends. That’s not such a big deal b/c this vacuum works so well, the attachments that came with it seem to be all that I really need. So stop your research and just get this vacuum.

It’s a winner!! I doubt this one will break anytime soon, but when it is time to get a new vacuum, I’ll buy a Miele again. Definitely.

- Michael

After having my last two vacuums die unceremonious deaths, I decided to do a little more research in buying a vacuum than usual. I checked consumer, and epinions for reports on the latest canister vacuums. I tried out my neighbors vacuums to see if they met my needs, and ultimately decided on the Electrolux Oxygen Ultra.I am not sorry! This vacuum is fantastic. The bare floor attachment in larger than most making the task of vacuuming easier. However, it still manages to fit into all of my smaller areas (between toilet and tub). It is also more narrow than most I have tried. Because of this, I was able to vacuum in between my banister poles, leaving me one less job to do.

This attachment, along with the telescoping pole, did a terrific job getting under my couches, beds, and dressers, with the exception of one of my daughter’s rooms where there isn’t much clearance. Furthermore, I decided to give it a go on my blinds. It did a terrific job removing the dust from the 2 1/2 slats.

I then switched out for the motorized head and was very impressed with the power it had for carpeting. I actually found myself being pulled along by it. I used on my berber, and area rugs. It did a great job cleaning them both. Fantastically, the power head plugs right into the handle to make cleaning my stairs a breeze. It took a little getting used to, but I think it did a better job than my last vacuum with a special stairs attachment.

The canister itself is better than others I have worked with. It moved effortlessly. I did not find it was crashing into walls or getting caught up on furniture. It was extremely quiet as well. I found the cord length to be sufficient (I have quite a large house and didn’t have change outlets anymore often than with other vacuums) and the extra length on the hose made cleaning higher items easier.

I love the controls on the handle as well. The buttons controlling the power, type of vacuuming and on/off switch were easy to use.

I had no problems with changing out the heads. However, I have not been able to work the space saving storage option of hooking the head onto the canister body. This is not such an issue as I have the space to store it without utilizing this feature.

Bottom line: This is a great machine. I recommend spending the money, and getting a machine that will do a great job and last.

This little vacuum packs in power and innovative design. From the first try, I was amazed at the suction. The first time through the house I quickly filled the bag and had to change it. The Intensity pulled up all the little carpet fuzz on the 3-year-old carpet that my old vacuum could never get. It has more power than any other vacuum I’ve used.

The collapsing design is a nice feature. It folds up into a neat little package that fits easily on a closet floor without running into the coats. I love the controls on the top of the handle. You can go from bare floor to carpet with the touch of a button. The cord retracts nicely. The bag is easy to change, though a bit small, well, because the vacuum is small.

I discovered a nice fail-safe feature when I tried to finish the room when the full bag light was on. The vacuum shut off. I waited a bit to let it cool down, changed the bag, and it started right up. So pay attention to that light.

Overall, the design is fantastic. A couple improvements though would make it even better. For it’s small size, light weight and those big wheels, it doesn’t corner all that easily. The front is nice and flat and has an edge for going under cabinets, but since the front is the same width as the back, you can’t go straight under cabinets. You have to go at an angle and keep adjusting the position. So making the front part a little wider than the back would make going under cabinets a breeze.

Also, if it didn’t have that big carrying handle on the top of the canister, it would vacuum right under the bed. The handle isn’t positioned well anyway for doing stairs, because when you hold it by the handle to maneuver on stairs, it’s too back heavy and tips back. A handle placed a little farther back on the canister would solve that problem – and it would vacuum under the bed.

There are no attachments with this vacuum, but I prefer that it do it’s job on the floors and I use a cordless vacuum for furniture, edging and stairs anyway.

Please don’t write this vacuum off as a secondary, light-duty vacuum. Even though it’s small, it’s a full-duty whole house vacuum with plenty of suction.

Being overly enthusiastic about anything, let alone a vacuum cleaner, is not something that I am known for. And indeed, I’ve often been a little sceptical of anyone who’d take the time to write a product review and post it on the Internet – I mean, why bother? But as far as the Electrolux EL6988E Vacuum Cleaner is concerned, I’m going to make an exception, as it has really turned out to be one of the best buying decisions that I’ve ever made.

I was really after something that was going to make our entire home less polluted.  I used the word polluted because it has been shown that the quality of air in your home is quite often of a poorer quality than that found outside in your garden or even on a busy city street.

I made some substantial decisions on the day I purchased the Electrolux EL6988E.  The HEPA filtration system was the feature that initially caught my eye.  As we own dogs and a cat, clearing up dog hair and cat dander is a necessary evil that we have to face.  The attachments, were also an important, albeit secondary consideration.  As it turns out, they have been ideal for cleaning under things such as our furniture and our drapes.

I was a little unsure if the vacuum could handle our long and steep staircase, but it has been doing the job undeterred.  I’ve had to use a longer extension cord but thankfully have had no problem in swinging the vacuum over my shoulder as it light and easy to carry on the way down.  The lightness has been especially helpful as we have a small landing before you reach the top of the stairs and there are no plug sockets there.

I did read some reviews prior to purchasing the Electrolux EL6988E that suggested that vacuums using HEPA filters can have issues with deep carpeting.  However, I soon learned that by altering my vacuuming setting, it can easily handle our shag rug and get right to the very canvas that the wool was knotted around.

The suction has also proved to be a bonus.  I had to put a foot down on my rugs as it almost began sucking those in, too.  I would recommend this vacuum to anyway who owns rugs.

The other features that initially caught my attention, and which I’ve since come to value are the:

•    on-board storage container
•    change bag indicator and;
•    retractable cord

The only drawback I can really point to with this vacuum is the noise.  It is louder than I am used to and sometimes I find it a little intrusive if I am trying to listen to music from my iPod.  Although it is no more than a buzzing sound in the distance as I listen through my headphones, it is still noticeable and a bit annoying.

I’d say that the Electrolux EL6988E is a good all around vacuum cleaner for any home.  I wouldn’t trade mine for the world and I expect that we will only part with it when it finally wears out, though I suspect that won’t be for many years to come.
